Top Officials Join JBG, Lowe, JBGR to Launch Fort Totten Square

Washington, DC (January 30, 2013) – With the enthusiastic support of neighbors and city officials, The JBG Companies, Lowe Enterprises and JBG Rosenfeld Retail today officially launched Fort Totten Square, heralding the start of long-awaited shopping and new residential choices in Northeast Washington, D.C.

Fort Totten neighbors, who routinely travel miles to shop and buy groceries, will have good, local opportunities when the new complex opens in late 2014. Fort Totten Square will include 345 apartments, 130,000 square feet of retail anchored by an urban-format Wal-Mart, and street-level convenience stores.

“This neighborhood has been eager for a grocery and new housing for many years,” said James Iker, a partner with The JBG Companies. “With our partners, we’ve had many discussions with community leaders about what it means to have this infusion of shopping and modern apartments, and we are very pleased to be able to provide that opportunity. We are committed to developing Fort Totten Square as a model development that will be embraced by the neighbors, the region and the City of Washington.”

Today’s ceremony marked a community coup for Northeast Washington, but also an economic development boost urged by District council members Muriel Bowser (Ward 4), Kenyan McDuffie (Ward 5) and the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Victor Hoskins, all of whom spoke enthusiastically during groundbreaking ceremonies.

Lowe Enterprises Real Estate Group, a partner with The JBG Companies, initiated Fort Totten Square in 2004. Lowe’s Senior Vice President, Joe Carrol, successfully drove a sound long-term vision for the project, earning plaudits from city officials anxious for redevelopment in northeast.

“Locating this beautiful complex in an already busy area served by transit and good roads fits with good government policy and common sense. We all are rooting for it to be successful,” Carrol said. “This ceremony signals continuing economic progress in this and all corners of the District.”  

Fort Totten Square will blend modern architecture with traditional retail facades that will complement the surrounding community.  The new development will be 4-5 stories, and will contain both underground parking and loading and an above-grade parking structure.  

Fort Totten Square was designed by architect Hickok Cole, with landscape design by Parker Rodriguez. Clark Builders Group is building the complex.
